Loc Journey Files: Roneisha’s Loc Journey

DL: How long have you been loc’d?

Roneisha: 4 years

DL: Why did you decide to loc your hair?

Roneisha: I wanted a change of pace. I was also going through a transition period in my life and I wanted a way to reconnect with my roots.

DL: Do you have a favorite product you like to use on your hair?

Roneisha: I LOVE Cantu’s Leave-in Conditioner Cream. I use it after I wash when I am doing flexirod curls…my hair stays curly for so long.

DL: How has your loc journey been thus far?

Roneisha: The first couple of years were a little rough. My loctian stopped doing hair and I had to figure out how to do my own retightening, what products were good for me, etc. It was the struggle, to say the least, lol. I have grown and learned as my locs have grown, so now the journey has become easier.

DL: What do you think is the biggest misconception about people with locs?

Roneisha: That we don’t care about our hair and it’s always dirty. If anything we care about out hair more than anyone else because we have to constantly be concerned about moisturizing the locs themselves and the health of our scalp so that our locs continue to be healthy as they grow.

DL: Would you say being loc’d helped you become more in tune with your mind, body, and soul?

Roneisha: YES!! I’ve become so much more aware of what I take into my body and how it affects my hair growth. My Babies have also taught me to be a lot more patient lol.

DL: What would you like to see more regarding the loc’d community?

Roneisha: How to do self-maintenance. It is so easy to maintain on your own and it will help you save so much money in the long run. I’m not saying don’t treat yourself to a professional stylist every now and then, but don’t be dependent upon someone else for your hair and beauty.

DL: What is your hair care routine like?

Roneisha: I have a very simple “hands-off approach”. I wash my hair once a month because I don’t use a lot of products. I spray my hair every morning with water that has Vitamin E and Jojoba oil in it. The day I wash, I use a leave-in conditioner and I roll with flexirods. I sleep in a scarf (but it doesn’t always stay on all night lol).

DL: What would you advise someone considering locs?

Roneisha: Make sure you do your research and start them in a way that you are comfortable with (not the way that a person wants to start them). PLEASE do not become a product junkie (lol). Above all else, don’t compare your Crown of Locs to someone else’s…your locs are YOUR BEAUTY, OWN IT.

DL: Pretend you’re writing a love letter about your locs. What would you write about them?

Dear Locs,

Thank you for teaching me to love myself and to connect with my Inner Beauty. I know I could not have done that without you..because for the first 31 year of my life, I didn’t. You have helped me to see that I don’t have to be liked by everyone and that I don’t have to fit everyone’s standard of beauty.
