DL: How long have you been loc’d?
Shaneka: 4 years
DL: Why did you decide to loc your hair?
Shaneka: Honestly, I was natural for a year and being natural wasn’t as popular or acceptable like it is now. I just randomly decided to do it because I didn’t know how to maintain my natural hair after the perms stopped.
DL: Do you have a favorite product you like to use on your hair?
Shaneka: I keep my products simple. Just a mixture of oils my loctician made. It consists of shea, mango, jojoba oil and other essential oils.
DL: How has your loc journey been thus far?
Shaneka: It wasn’t easy. Had my set done by someone who didn’t take the time to put healthy products in my hair and my locs were all different sizes and dry. This second set of locs journey was well worth it.
DL: What do you think is the biggest misconception about people with locs?
Shaneka: The biggest misconception is that your hair texture needs to be “rough” or “nappy” to loc your hair. When you see or feel my hair that’s not the case at all. You just have to take care of your hair.
DL: Would you say being loc’d helped you become more in tune with your mind, body, and soul?
Shaneka: Yes. And the reason is my hair is just as beautiful as the girl with the relaxed hair or the girl with the curly hair. Everyone’s natural journey is different
DL: What would you like to see more regarding the loc’d community?
Shaneka: I would like to see more people embrace the beauty in all natural hair and not just curly loose hair.
DL: What is your hair care routine like?
Shaneka: My hair routine is simple. Every 4-5 weeks retwist and every night I tie my hair down faithfully with a scarf.
DL: What would you advise someone considering locs?
My my my! Have you grown! From a bud to a flower. You have changed people’s perception of how locs can look and how they are actually kept up and healthy. But also you appreciate free form as well because you know every once journey is different. That’s what I love about you the most. The fact that you are different!
