DL: How long have you been loc’d?
Tammy: 9 years
DL: Why did you decide to loc your hair?
Tammy: I love the look and I didn’t want to have to style my hair all the time. I have a very hectic schedule.
DL: Do you have a favorite product you like to use on your hair?
Tammy: I don’t put a lot of products in it at all. I use head and shoulders dandruff shampoo to wash it and locking gel and edge control to lay my edges when I retwist it.
DL: How has your loc journey been thus far?
Tammy: I’ve loved it. I went a moment where I thought I wanted short hair and I cut them. I grew them back and will never do it again. I love my locs!
DL: What do you think is the biggest misconception about people with locs?
Tammy: The biggest misconception is that people with locs are ghetto or from the “hood”. Locs are not a product of a person’s mental or physical environment. It’s a culture and how it is expressed depends on each individual person.
DL: Would you say being loc’d helped you become more in tune with your mind, body, and soul?
Tammy: I would say my locs definitely made me aware of how comfortable I am with myself as a person versus wearing sew-ins or wigs. So yes, because of my love for my locs I have become more in tune with myself.
DL: What would you like to see more regarding the loc’d community?
Tammy: I would definitely like to see more acceptance in the workforce and just generally speaking. Locs are like any other hairstyle; they can be well groomed just like the other styles that the public accepts.
DL: What is your hair care routine like?
Tammy: Mostly I just make sure that it’s washed clean. When I’m traveling or attending an event, I may style it into braids or something very nice.
DL: What would you advise someone considering locs?
Tammy: Anyone who is considering locs should be comfortable with themselves. There will be moments when you feel it doesn’t look the best but love them and yourself. No one’s hair is perfect.
You make me feel special. You help me stand out. I am one with you and I feel Godly. I wouldn’t want any other style. I wear you as a crown for the queen that I am. I use each of you to count the blessings around me and I’m thankful.
